As a small business marketing blog, we cover a lot of digital marketing tactics. In our opinion, SEO is the most powerful form of marketing your business can invest in. In fact, we’ve written about it before. In case you don’t stay up to date with digital marketing news, Google has been on a tear ripping down sites that have invested in SEO.
No one knows for sure, but we can speculate. Google wants people to invest in Google ads, not third part SEO companies. SEO companies are a major thorn in Google’s side, and they will do anything in their power to tear them down.
At the end of the day, I can’t really blame them. They are a publicly traded company that has a duty to their shareholders to make a boat load of cash. The main way they do that is through paid search and display advertisements. FOr the most part, companies will invest in SEO or PPC ads. If a company is investing in SEO, they are taking money out of Google’s pocket. This can’t happen.
So this begs the question, as important as good SEO is for your business, should you be investing in it? There is a good chance that your efforts can get torn down by Google’s wrath and your website be sent off into obscurity. Once it is gone, there is really no coming back.
We reached out to our resident SEO expert, Ryan Stewart, for comment.
As an owner of one of the major SEO companies in Miami, this is always looming in the back of my mind. It is really frustrating, not only as a business owner, but as someone who wants to help small business success with their online efforts. Getting visibility in search engines is vital for your digital marketing success but the odds are stacked against you. The way Google’s algorithm is set up is to favor large multi billion dollar companies. That means as SEOs we have to find a way to work within their framework and get success for our clients. Google constantly changes their algorithm and makes it more difficult to have success, and they penalize websites that follow their guidelines. I still believe in SEO and I still believe that investing in SEO is vital for your business to have online success. Only time will tell to see how this all pans out…
Ryan may be a little bit biased, but we side with him. If your business wants to have success online you have to get found. More people click on organic search results as opposed to ads, so being present is becoming increasingly important.
We will continue to cover this topic as things unfold. Stay tuned for more updates.
